Mike’s Home
It’s official! Mike is home from the hospital and feeling pretty good. He had his first out patient appointment today and found travelling back and forth in a car was okay. We were a bit concerned that he may feel nauseaus, but so far so good. Our bathroom looks like a pharmacy and he can even give himself an IV drip at home when he needs this one type of medicine. He is very happy to be able to walk around the house and sleep in his own bed. We are anxious to get back into a normal routine. Mike will have to go daily to the hospital for about 10 days and then likely it will taper back to three times per week. He will go with the volunteer driver program and I will drive on weekends if it is necessary. He will continue regular visits to VGH until January at which time he will undergo many tests and the results will determine the next phase. This could mean only monthly checkups or a host of other options depending on how he progresses. During this time he will continue to gain strength and stamina – he won’t be playing hockey or jogging – but certainly he will be walking further and doing more normal things. I am returning to my regular work days of three days per week. It will be nice to focus on something besides hospital visits.
So the worst is behind us and we look ahead to the next milestones. We have been warned that there will still be ups and downs in terms of how Mike will feel over the coming months, but there is treatment for most things that can give him any trouble. These things would be related to his body accepting the new marrow.
We have been most thankful for the love and support from our friends and co-workers. It has truly made a difference and we can’t wait to start seeing some of you again over time. Mike will be able to answer his own emails now so do be in touch – I know he would like that.
