Mike’s Transplant Done

Julie Eastman

Hello everyone. Well, the transplant is done. Wow!! Mike received the stem cells on Wednesday Sept 25th at about 6:00. It took about an hour to infuse them and that was it. Now we wait about two weeks for the stem cells to find their way to the bone cavity and make new blood. This will be the beginning of grafting, it is the next big thing we want to see.

He is in good spirits right now. I’ve been staying over night at the hospital during the radiation and the receiving of the stem cells. He will have a few pretty good days – just tired and worn out. However, in the following week he is likely to begin experiencing more discomfort due to anti rejection drugs that irritate the lining of the mouth and throat. This is apparently the worst part and lasts about 10 days. He will have morphine to control pain. Everyone gets some of this problem and it can occur in different degrees. We hope it is more mild, but it can still be unpleasant. Anyhow, he has a week down and many more to go but we are moving forward and are very thankful for the chance this will give him to be cured.

Mike’s parents are here to help look after Kyle while I am at the hospital so we have things pretty settled. There will definitely be no visitors for the next few weeks. Thanks for the emails and good wishes.

Will be in touch again soon.
