Waiting for a Donor
Hello everyone.
There is not too much new news to report. A donor still has not been found for Mike. The waiting is becoming increasingly difficult, but we remain positive and take things one day at a time. We know there is at least one partial match that has been found but the doctors are holding out for a perfect match. They continue to search so it is still good to sign up to the marrow registry. A partial match will only be done as a last resort as it presents significant complications for the recipient.
The doctors can’t predict how long remission will last. It could be a long time or a short time. All they know is that if it is a short time, that the leukemia is particularily aggressive. This is not a good thing. (Those were the doctors exact words.) And so we wait.
They seem confident that they will find someone to match but it feels like a race against time in many ways. Mike feels really good right now and we are taking full advantage by doing some fun things around the city. It is going to be a significant amount of time before Mike is able to return to work. The doctor just told us to expect atleast a year after transplant before normal activities will resume. There are obviously many variables to consider that could decrease or increase that time, but we are braced for the long haul. Anyhow, we welcome any emails and calls anytime anyone wants to check up on us. We won’t be far from the house.
Hope everyone is enjoying the remaining days of summer. Take care.
