Mike
Finally got Kyle down to sleep, whew! He’s going to bed so late these days because I am not getting home until 8:00. Oh well, that way he sleeps in.
So, to give you an update. Right now, if you didn’t know Mike was so sick, you wouldn’t know anything was wrong with him. His doctors are very pleased so far with his progress. He has been receiving Chemo since last Friday. He gets his last dose for this month tomorrow. After that, the chemo continues to kill his bone marrow for about another week. We think at that point that he may get a bone marrow transplant. We are not sure if or when, for sure, he is a candidate for that. His brother and sister get tested next week as the best chance of a possible match.
He will likely continue to need some chemo and radiation. That part is all unclear because it depends on his progress as the weeks progress. He may have to spend another month in hospital after having a month at home, but that is up in the air right now too.
The hardest thing is the not knowing what is coming up, but there is no way for the doctors to know until it gets closer in time. They are being excellent. No notice of cutbacks in this area.
Mike’s spirits are good. He gets tired easily and continues to have a very sore throat, though that seems to be improving. He has no appetite as his mouth tastes like metal.
He can have visitors anytime and does appreciate people coming to see him. It is the Centennial Pavilion, sixth floor East. Everyone has to wash their hands really well at the hand washing station prior to going in and if anyone has a cold or sickness of the slightest type they can’t go in.
It’s pretty unreal that this has all happened. We are very positive and he has every thing that possibly could going in his favor. It was caught very early in that he didn’t have many symptoms. He would have been sicker and sicker as time went by. Considering he went for a two hour hike one week prior to this mess, seems to indicate he wasn’t too far gone.
It is very astonishing what has happened and our world was certainly turned upside down when we first got the news. While the uncertainty is still difficult I feel very hopeful that he can beat this thing and as he says, become one of the cured. The support we are receiving from people is overwhelming and extremely helpful, it all means so much!!
We are keeping our chins up and taking one day at a time. If you have any questions, please e-mail me and I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks so much.
